2009 brings with it the 90th anniversary of Bauhaus architecture movement, whose influence has been felt around the world, but particularly in Chicago, which was home to Bauhaus pioneer Mies van der Rohe. 2009 also brings with it a heightened awareness of environmental issues, and our lecture series unites these two themes. It also unites the Goethe-Institut Chicago with other European cultural institutes, as well as the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Illinois Institute of Technology's Mies van der Rohe Society. Join us for presentations by leading European architects and designers at locations around Chicago as we learn about how climate change affects design, and how planners create structures which make a positive contribution to the eco-system. “Bauhaus to Green Haus” is a program of Living Modern Chicago. "Bauhaus to Green Haus" is organized by the Goethe-Institut Chicago and the following organizations: the Austrian Consulate General in Chicago, the Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Chicago, the Consulate General of Switzerland in Chicago, the Consulate General of Italy in Chicago and the Istituto Italiano di Cultura.
Matthias Böttger studied architecture and urban planning in Karlsruhe and London. His academic work began at the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation and has included further teaching positions in Stuttgart, and, currently, Zürich’s ETH. Böttger co-founded the Berlin-based firm raumtaktik with Friedriech von Borries; both architects specialize in “räumliche Aufklärung und Intervention,” best translated as "spatial intelligence and intervention" (Aufklärung is also the German word for enlightenment). They have jointly curated the touring exhibition “Fanshop of Globalization” as well as Germany’s entry "Updating Germany" in the 2008 architecture biennale in Venice. Matthias Böttger is a fellow at the Academy Schloss Solitude for 2009.
This presentation is free and open to the public.
