Ernst Theodor Wilhelm (Amadeus) Hoffmann (1776 – 1822), writer, jurist, composer music critic and caricaturist, was one of the key figures of the German Romantic Movement. His popular tales of fantasy and horror “mix up the horrible notion of the double goer with ordinary feelings of all kinds” and influenced many a writer in 19th century Europe and America.
