Ueli Steiger was born and raised in Switzerland.
He has an MA. in English literature, linguistics and art history from the University of Zurich and studied cinematography at the London International Film School. Steiger briefly worked in Europe, but soon turned to Hollywood, where he shot his first film (Promised Land) in 1986.

In 1990 he moved to Los Angeles and worked on Dennis Hopper’s Hot Spot, followed by many high-profile films such as Bowfinger, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, Just Visiting and many more. He joined forces with Roland Emmerich as collaborator on Independence Day (1996) and worked on Godzilla and The Patriot. He helmed Emmerich’s impressive environmental thriller The Day After Tomorrow and will leave town the day after Hollywood Talks Shop to shoot Roland Emmerich’s new film Ten Thousand B.C.
