Committee of Women’s and Gender Studies Institutions in German-Speaking Areas (KEG)

This website provides an overview of the organisations and institutes working in the area of German-language gender studies that joined together in summer 2006 to form an umbrella organisation. Information provided about the member organisations as well as about the activities, seminars and study groups offfered by the umbrella organisation.
Deutscher Akademikerinnenbund e. V. (i.e., association of German women academics)
The Deutsche Akademikerinnenbund is an independent association of women university and polytechnic graduates in all professional walks of life. The association’s goal is to empower women academics to make effective use of their professional knowledge and expertise, to improve the status of women and girls through gender mainstreaming, and to promote a model of life that successfully combines children and career.
GenderKompetenzZentrum (i.e., centre for gender competence)
This application-oriented research institute of Humboldt University in Berlin assists governmental administration in equal opportunity and rights policy. It is financed by the German Federal Ministry of Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth.
Institute for Queer Theory
The Institute for Queer Theory is a meeting place for research, cultural production and sociopolitical change. It was founded in April, 2006 by Antke Engel, former Guest Professor of Queer Theory at the University of Hamburg.
International Gender and Language Association
This international and interdisciplinary organisation promotes and supports research in the areas of language, gender and sexuality. It was founded in 1999 to continue the work of the Berkeley Women and Language Group, founded and directed by graduate students starting in 1985.
Initiatives and Projects
„Die Technik ist weiblich“ (i.e., the gender of „technology“ is feminine)
„Die Technik ist weiblich“ is a blog accompanying a project of the Fachhochschule Campus Wien (i.e., technical university of Vienna) of the same name. It offers information on the themes of gender in technology and the natural sciences, and gender mainstreaming in the area of technical professions and training programmes. This project aims to raise young people’s awareness of technology and the natural sciences. Above all, young women are encouraged to take advantage of professional perspectives and career opportunities in technical and natural science professions.
FEMMES 'R' US

The project, FEMMES 'R' US, deals with contemporary feminist artistic positions. It derives from the work of the Berlin project, FEMMES WITH FATAL BREAKS – an “all female” DJ-MC network whose members Ina Wudtke and Christine Lang curated this interdisciplinary programme. The project is sponsored primarily by Berlin’s Hauptstadtkulturfonds (i.e. fund for culture in the capital).
Gender – Chancengleichheit im Arbeitsleben (i.e. gender – equal opportunity in working life)
The thematic pages of the Hans Böckler Foundation („Böckler Boxes“) provide facts and figures, information on current research and practice, as well as graphics.
Gender Datenreport (i.e., gender data report)
Annotated data report on equality between men and women in the Federal Republic of Germany, provided by the Federal Ministry of Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth.
Gender und Schule (i.e., gender and school)
The goal of Gender und Schule is to raise awareness of gender issues in schools and to reshape patterns of perception. The website is aimed at teachers, students and interested parents. Its main focus is information for teachers on the concrete designing of teaching units as well as contributions directly aimed at students.
Netzwerk Gender Training (i.e., network of gender training)
The Netzwerk Gender Training was founded in 1997 as a nationwide association of women gender trainers and consultants under the auspices of the NRO-Frauenforum (i.e., NGO women’s forum), an association of women from development and women’s policy-oriented non-governmental organisations (NGOs). Gender trainings facilitate the encounter with gender relations issues in the context of social and cultural conditions. They were introduced in the early 1990’s within the context of development policy and have also been adopted in Germany by institutions involved in education, the economy, politics, and administration and management as a part of the implementation of the platform of the World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995.
Neue Wege für Jungs (i.e. new avenues for boys)
This nationwide network of initiatives on career choice and life planning for boys aims to present boys with new avenues and a wide variety of perspectives for their career and life planning, and show them new viewpoints on the issues of career choice and role models. This project, started in 2005, assists and connects people and groups active in presenting their opportunities specifically to boys (schoolboys from Class 5 through Class 10) and address questions on career and life planning in an appropriately gender-sensitive manner.
Prix Jeunesse
The foundation Prix Jeunesse focuses its work primarily on the international children’s television scene. It was established in 1964 with the goal of promoting high quality in television for children and young people, deepening understanding among the world’s peoples, and enlivening programme exchange. Under the title, „Girls and Boys and Television – The Role of Gender,“ the issue of gender was the central theme of the 2008 Festival.
QUING
The project QUING – „Quality in Gender + Equality Policies“ is being implemented from 2006 – 2011 as a part of the 6th supporting programme of the European Commission. The project’s goal is to collect and develop knowledge and information for policies against gender discrimination, to counteract inequality and technocratic tendencies in the EU. In addition, QUING evaluates the contents, quality and problems of current equality policies in individual European countries and is developing standards for gender training.
TOTAL E-QUALITY
TOTAL E-QUALITY Deutschland e.V. has the goal of establishing equal opportunity for women and men in the economy, the sciences, politics, and administration and management, and establishing it irreversibly, thus bringing about a paradigm shift in personnel policy. The association awards the TOTAL E-QUALITY distinction for exemplary action in equal opportunity-oriented personnel management to firms, organisations, universities and research institutions that engage in equal opportunity-oriented personnel management. In addition, TOTAL E-QUALITY promotes networking and supports research throughout Europe.
Vaeter.de (i.e., fathers)
Vaeter.de is a website for fathers and men who seek to improve the balance between the demands of family and career. For the first time, fathers can obtain professional advice on topics such as flexible work hours and paternity leave.

Europäische Akademie für Frauen in Politik und Wirtschaft (i.e., European academy for women in politics and the economy)
The Europäische Akademie für Frauen in Politik und Wirtschaft is an independent, non-profit organisation with headquarters in Berlin. The EAF assists ambitious and committed young women and girls, and offers them guidance on their career paths. In addition, it offers consultation to individuals, firms and organisations in business and politics on diversity management, leadership development and work-life balance.

The Gender Zentrum Augsburg is an institution providing research, continuing education and service in the area of gender mainstreaming to organisations. The centre’s work is based on the conviction that successful organisational and personnel development must be based on gender equality and awareness.

Ceiberweiber is an Austrian women’s online magazine offering news on politics and society, special pages about women’s projects, and numerous relevant links.
Frauen Kunst Wissenschaft (i.e., women, art, science)
Frauen Kunst Wissenschaft is the sole publishing organ for feminist art, art research and cultural activity in the German-speaking region. The magazine was founded after the 3rd Women Art Historians’ Conference in Vienna in 1986, as a contribution to strengthening the network of feminist cultural initiatives, to collect and document the spectrum of positions in feminist discourse, and to bring together feminists working in the diversity of societal contexts.
Gender Portal
The Gender-Portal of the University of Duisburg-Essen provides information on the topics of gender mainstreaming, equality and the advancement of women. Its purpose is to provide a platform for teachers and researchers, as well as for university employees at the administrative and executive levels.

The Genderblog is a collaborative weblog on gender topics.
MissTilly.de – Women’s Online Magazine
The online magazine MissTilly.de sets its sights on outdated clichés about women. It contains informative and entertaining articles on societal and political issues.

Missy is a magazine for women with an interest in pop culture, politics and style.
Onlinejournal Kultur & Geschlecht (i.e, online journal for culture and gender)
The Ruhr University – Bochum’s online journal Kultur & Geschlecht provides a forum for talented young Ruhr University – Bochum scholars conducting research on gender issues and their contexts.
Querelles-Net (i.e., issues net)
Querelles-Net is the first and, until now, sole online magazine dedicated explicitly to women’s and gender research. The core focus of this review magazine is on the discussion of current scholarly publications, specialist information on core topics, surveys of the current status of research, annotated link lists and bibliographies, as well as selected contributions on central issues. Querelles-Net is a publication of the Centre for the Promotion of Women’s and Gender Studies of the Free University of Berlin.
