Born in 1925, the young Hartmut von Hentig went to school in the Third Reich. The most important lesson he learned from that experience is that children should be educated in a way that enables them to develop as strong and free-thinking personalities. His progressive educational philosophy was very much in keeping with the attitudes of the 1968 generation, but von Hentig took these ideas to another level. He was not content to criticise the system; his aim was to empower himself and others for enlightened learning and self-determination.
