HANNES SCHMIDT
Hannes Schmidt studied architecture in Hamburg, at the Politecnica Valencia and at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. Focussing on urban development projects and furniture design, his interest soon centred on design-build and recyclable materials. He first became familiar with collaborative construction processes in a school building project. In 2014, he drew up his Master’s thesis along these topics, designing and building a temporary restaurant in Weimar. Collaborating with students from other faculties, a new space with objects called Lücke (“gap”) was created by students on an idle plot of land using old windows, timber slats and truck tarpaulins. The graduate operated the restaurant for ten weeks, working closely with local livestock and agricultural farms. Schmidt has been working freelance ever since, realizing projects across Europe. These have included the concept and idea of the Zurich Christmas market on Sechseläuten Square and its bar stalls, the development of a shop for dance shoes in Berlin, as well as contributions to establishing an artists’ residence with a workshop and study in southern Portugal.
