Common use of goods seems to be a comprehensive trend of our time. As early as the 1970s, masterminds of the knowledge economy like Daniel Bell predicted that in knowledge societies the use of goods would be more important than ownership. This development has recently been manifested in phenomena such as Creative Commons platforms, online exchanges and car sharing portals. Yet how lasting is this trend and what motivations propel it? What technological developments are changing the “practice of sharing” and what role do factors such as resource scarcity and wealth inequality play in the future of sharing?
