Mikhail Gelfand,
bioinformatics researcher and opposition politician

Mikhail Gelfand is professor of bioinformatics at Lomonosov University, Moscow. He has published more than 200 papers in academic journals and is a member of Academia Europaea. He works for the newspaper Troitsky Variant – Nauka as deputy editor-in-chief, and is active in the editorial boards of several academic journals. In 2007, Mikhail Gelfand was distinguished with the Bayev Award of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Professor Gelfand advises the Russian Ministry of Education and Research and is a member of the coordinating council of the Russian opposition at the same time. The coordinating council was founded in autumn 2012 as an attempt to assemble the divided Russian opposition under one heading, and thus initiate a dialogue between various forces.
