Adam Nádasdy

Adam Nádasdy was born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1947, in a partly German-speaking family. He studied at Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest, where he is now professor of English linguistics. He has an MA in English and Italian, and a PhD in phonology. He also taught English as a foreign language, and has published studies on the linguistics of Hungarian and English. He is a well-known columnist for various Hungarian papers, writing for the public about issues of language and society, and is a popular lecturer even in such forbidding fields as generative linguistics.

His literary activity is in Hungarian. He has published several volumes of poetry, and has translated a number of plays from English into Hungarian (including nine plays by Shakespeare, two by Wilde, and three by Shaw), all of which have been, and are being, staged in Hungarian-language theatres in Hungary, Slovakia and Romania. He is currently translating Dante’s Divine Comedy in a new, non-rhymed version.
