Ute Schaeffer is editor-in chief of Deutschen Welle, Germany’s international broadcaster. She began her work for DW in 1995 as editor for politics and economics. After transferring to Deutsche Welle’s Eastern European programmes, she rebuilt the broadcaster’s Ukrainian programme that she had directed from 2001 until 2005. From 2005 until 2011, she directed the programmes for Africa and the Near East for DW. Focal points of her journalistic coverage are European and German foreign and development policy as well as political, economic and social development in numerous countries in Africa and Eastern Europe.
She has had extensive stays abroad in, among others, more than 20 states of sub-Saharan Africa, in the Near East and the Gulf States, and in Eastern Europe.
Ute Schaeffer studied history, art history, comparative literature and Romance philology.
