In January 2011, the upheaval in Tunisia began to shake the Arab world in lasting ways. Here too, the forces for democratisation in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya reference the ideal of democracy as guarantor of participative opportunities, self-determination in freedom and the constitutional rule of law. In this context, one point of discussion is what a specifically Islamic democracy might be.

This positive narrative of democracy stands in contrast to the practically simultaneously arising wave of protest in Europe and the USA, in which the functionality of the western model of democracy is also being subjected to scrutiny. In the wake of the current financial crisis, an enormous potential for the emergence of social movements is developing. Around the globe, for the most part younger population groups are mobilising into protest communities. Their target is, among other things, the influence of economic players on political decisions, which is perceived as excessively powerful, meagre prospects for the future especially for young, well-educated sectors of society, and political elites, who are generally regarded as discredited and corrupt. In particular, younger generations, who are the first to be affected by an intensification of labour-market competition and cutbacks in social benefits, are reacting in many areas with massive protests.

What are the connections between the movements for radical change in North Africa with the protest movements in Europe and the USA? Where are they influencing each other, where do they differ from each other? What potential for renewal do the current protest movements represent for European democracies? And what role are new forms of communication playing in these processes?
