In 1979, he was a co-founder of Stars, a group of independent artists. Between 1984 and 2001 the avant-garde artist lived and worked in Japan. On his return to Beijing, he was one of the first artists to move into the 798 Art District, established in 2000 in a disused arms factory in Beijing. Today he curates the annual 798 Dashanzi International Art Festival.Huang Rui’s original artistic focus in the 1980s was on painting. Since the 1990s, he has devoted himself to art forms such as installations, performance art, photography and graphic art, and works as a journalist.
