Xu Bing is the vice director of the Beijing Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA). His installations question the communication of meanings by illustrating how easily both meanings and written words can be manipulated.Well-known works by Xu Bing include his "Book of the Sky" (tian shu), which was printed using made-up Chinese characters and is a theme that is picked up again in many of his installations; later he produced a "Book of the Earth" (di shu) which, unlike the "Book of the Sky", is not based on traditional techniques but is devoted to the modern age.
