Curriculum Vitae

Zhang Xiaogang is regarded as one of China’s most talented painters. From the early 1990s, Zhang Xiaogang spent over a decade producing a series of oil paintings based on old family portraits from the time of the cultural revolution. This series, entitled "Bloodlines: Big Family", became his trademark. Once Zhang Xiaogang had completed his degree at the Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts in the 1980s, he was one of the leading members of the "Sichuan School", a group of painters who focused their attention on surrealistic, folkloristic and highly psychological works. Later, he developed a more sensitive and colourful style. Particular characteristics of Zhang Xiaogang’s works are his skilful use of shading, their blurred edges and the watery eyes of the people pictured.
