„The Journey oft he Wall“ was the final project for this year’s visual communication class. How did the students approach their task?

The subject of this project is not abstract to Palestinian students; the Separation Wall erected by Israel on Palestinian territory is very real in their everyday life. Thus, they were very excited about this project and motivated to find out more about the subject. So we started research on wall-related topics, about the Separation Wall in Palestine and its social, economic, and political impact. We also had discussions on the Berlin Wall and walls in other countries such as Mexico. One group examined the graffiti art on the Palestinian wall. Other students interviewed Palestinians about the effect of the Wall on their everyday life and they collected a lot of interesting stories.

After doing the research the students started working on domino tiles in five groups. They developed a lot of creative ideas together! This was the first time I saw them working together in groups harmoniously – we have dine a lot of team work before, but this was the first time it really went so well!

How do you like the outcomes?

There is a lot of dynamic energy in their works. Considering the time-factor and the little experience the students had with large art projects, I think they did a great job!

Why did you choose to participate in this project?

I liked the project because it allows the students to overcome geographical borders. They learned a lot about other countries; and also it means a lot to them that their artwork will be a message from Palestine to Germany, exhibited there with other artworks from different parts of the world.
