"Double Club" – Languages Beyond The Penalty Box (Great Britain)

Arsenal FC, the Goethe-Institut and the UK German Connection created the "Double Club German" to motivate school students to learn the language by playing football and speaking German. In the meantime "Double Club Spanish" and "Double Club French" have also become available.

In 2007 Arsène Wenger and the ambassadors of the three participating countries launched this multilingual project. Since the summer of 2007 there has also been "Double Club Primary German" as a pilot for the three languages.

The Goethe-Institut has produced a new Workbook for secondary schools based on the new secondary curriculum with particular relevance for the new cross-curricular language teaching requirements. It contains many exciting activities involving up-to-date IT.
In 2008, the government of the United Kingdom made the "Double Club" available for all parts of the UK by funding the post of a co-ordinator.

Three different schools participating in the "Double Club" were invited to Brussels in November 2008 to gain a taste of the multi-lingual environment that is the European Parliament. In 2009, the "Double Club" teaching materials in German, Spanish and French for Primary Schools are to be launched. Moreover, an exchange programme with Germany is being discussed with Hertha BSC Berlin and Rot-Weiß Essen.
