The film landscape in Afghanistan, developed since the 1946, found a devastating end under the Taliban regime, mainly through a lack of access to public media. Nevertheless, compared to other areas of art the film industry developed relatively quickly. On one hand this is because the archives of the stateowned production company Afghan Film - at that time over 30 movies had been produced and released in the 17 cinemas of Kabul - have survived the war without damage and on the other hand directors have continued to work while in exile.

The International Documentary and Short Film Festival
The International Documentary and Short Film Festival initiated by the Goethe-Institut Kabul in 2006 is one of the most important events in the growing Afghan film scene.
