In recent years, alongside the National Theatre Ensemble many large and small theatre initiatives have formed not only in Kabul but also in other cities of the country which are trying to revive and reconnect to a lost tradition.

The National Theatre Festival

The Afghan National Theatre Festival initiated by the Goethe-Institut Kabul in 2004 is already one of the most important events in the Afghan theatre scene. Year by year both the number of participating theatre groups and the number of spectators continue to rise. The audience is thrilled and the various pieces are aired on nationwide TV channels.
The festival presents young actors and actresses - who are facing many more social stereotypes than their male colleagues - with an opportunity to continually enhance their skills through participation in various workshops.

A Puppet Theatre for Afghanistan

A few of the workshops have led to the formation of the first Afghan puppet theatre ensemble Parwaz.
