Information and Library

In Afghanistan there is no education for librarians.
Consequently, the demand for librarian training is enormously gigh. For this reason the Goethe-Institut Kabul places great importance on making librarian training facilities available.
Only little literature is being printed and publishes in Afghanistan since there is no publishing institution. Authors print their books and distribute them by themselves.
The Goethe-Institut Kabul has a media centre for Language Course Paricipants and German teachers. Furthermorte, a German Reading Room has been established in the University Library Kabul. Both have primarily German literature and films for German courses in their catalogues.

The Goethe-Institut Kabul works closely together with the University Library Kabul and other organisations in this field for example the Afghanisan Research and Evaluation Unit, the GTZ and the Asia Foundation.

Literature and Translation Training

In Afghanistan only few books are being published. The official languages are Dari and Pashtu. Many books are imported from Iran since Dari is very similar to the iraninian/persian language Farsi.
To support literature in Afghanistan, the Goethe-Institut so far has trasnlated thirteen German childern books to Dari and Pashtu (two others are currently in print). The childern books have been distributed the country, mainly in schools and libraries.
Once a year the Goethe-Institut organises the National Literature Forum wich serves as a platform for dialogue between Afghan authors in and out of the country.
The writers are thus given with the opportunity to present their new works.
