Your German Place in Australia

 Stephanie Weber

I have always been a big fan of Australia and its people and my three Australian flat mates during my time in London reinforced my interest to get to know the land down under. In January 2007, four weeks after returning back home from London; I organized my work & holiday visa, booked my ticket, packed my bags and moved from Troisdorf near Bonn to Sydney.

I did not know what to expect but my plan was to try finding a job in an office, work there for about 6 months, travel some time and head back home.

Shortly after my arrival and a couple of job applications later, I got the great chance to start working for a company in Sydney. And this is where I met Ben – a passionate surfer, barbeque lover and travel enthusiast – briefly worded: a real Aussie man. It was love at first sight for both of us and the initially planned 6 months turned out to be 2.5 years by now.

We have been together in Germany twice and it showed that, besides the German beer and food, Ben loves skiing, the old castles along the Rhine River and the German Christmas customs. My parents and my aunt and uncle on the other hand have fallen in love with the beauty of Australia during their stay last year.

I am visiting my family and friends in Germany at the moment and as much as I love being here, I am looking forward to be back in Sydney soon. Germany is my home country but Sydney is my absolute favorite city in the world with its great weather, stunning beaches, relaxed way of life and a very special Aussie man called Ben.

Living away from home made me appreciate the German culture a lot more and I am grateful to be able to live my Australian-German Story.
