The title reflects what we all must promote: German has always been, and will remain an important language in the world and is spoken and learnt by millions of people on all continents. Germany and German-speaking countries are major players, not only in the global economy, but in all fields of science and culture.

Strong ties between universities, scholarship and study opportunities in German-speaking countries provide enviable options. Transnational companies with branches in Australia provide a gateway to international careers in our region and beyond.

Students of German in Australia have and continue to enjoy life-changing exchange and scholarship opportunities and genuine global career opportunities, as well as developing intercultural skills for life in a mobile and plurilingual community.

This conference, which incorporates the Victorian State Conference, will reflect the quality languages education programs delivered by teachers across Australia, the achievements of the German teaching community in Australia, on Australian relations with German-speaking countries, and how we present and promote those programs, relations and opportunities in all Australian states to ensure Australian students have the best opportunities to learn across all levels of education and beyond.

Over two and a half days, local and international guest speakers and colleagues will again present new ideas and best practice examples ready for classroom use, and information on the latest research and language policies - state and national.

2012 is a landmark year for German, as we will be celebrating 40 years of Goethe-Institut in Australia, and some other anniversaries!
