born 15 April 1832 in Wiedensahl
died 9 January 1908 in Mechsthausen

1841 moves to his uncle, Pastor Georg Klein; receives private tuition
1847 - 1854 studies mechanical engineering in Hannover; changes career path and studies painting at the Düsseldorf Arts Academy, at Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and the Munich Arts Academy 
from 1859 starts drawing caricatures and writes poems for the magazine "Fliegende Blätter" and the "Münchener Bilderbogen"
1865 publication of the pictorial story "Max and Moritz"
from 1878   moves back to Wiedensahl and later to Mechtshausen; publishes, among others "Fipps der Affe", "Maler Klecksel" and a collection of poems "Zu guter Letzt"
