Heinrich von Kleist

© www.portrait.kaar.atBernd Heinrich Wilhelm von Kleist (1777 –1811) is one of Germany’s foremost dramatists, novelists and essayists of the 19th century. In his plays as well as in his novellas he explores the conflict between reason and feeling, divine and human law. Denied literary success during his lifetime and increasingly isolated he committed suicide at the age of 34. (list compiled May 2008)
