A mere romance on the surface, The Legend of Paul and Paula tells a story about the longing for freedom, happiness and self-governance. Separated only by a road yet living entirely different lives, Paul and Paula meet by chance and are instantly attract to each other. As the pair falls in love, Paul’s hesitance mixed with Paula’s impulsive nature make for an explosive combination within tragic results. Director Heiner Carow’s critical undertone almost had the film banned by the authorities before its completion, but East German leader Erich Honecker himself ultimately permitted its release. The touching story, creative setting and distinctive rock score turned this film into one of the greatest successes of DEFA.
