Ali: Fear Eats the Soul follows young Moroccan migrant worker Ali and 60-year-old German widow Emmi, as they fall into an unlikely love affair. Their relationship is met with disgust by Emmi’s family, neighbours and colleagues, who are harshly critical of her decision to marry a foreigner. But aside from the prejudices they face from their conservative society, the couple must also deal with the stark difference between their own expectations and the reality of their relationship.

“As with all Fassbinder's films, Fear Eats the Soul refuses to offer easy answers, preferring its audience to dwell on the gnawing dread that Emmi and Ali must endure: this is filmmaking at its rawest.” Christopher Machell, CineVue
