This film is based on a true story: Ludwig Fuchs, postman and member of the Nazi Party, writes a letter to his former schoolmate and high-rank Nazi member Hermann Goering and asks him to bring war to an end. When his letter falls into the hands of the Gestapo, Ludwig only survives because of Goering´s secret intervention: Fuchs is declared insane and thereby escapes punishment. After the war this causes major problems as no one believes in his story.
