This highly awarded film was Germany’s official entry for the 2010 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and was awarded the “Palme d’or” at the Festival de Cannes, “The White Ribbon” tells the story of a small town in north Germany shortly before the outbreak of World War I. When mysterious accidents and deaths begin to haunt to local children’s choir, the tranquillity and order of the village falters. Suspicion and fear reign, while the accidents begin to look more and more like ritual punishments. Shot in luminous monochrome, Haneke’s vision is at once challenging, gripping and symbolic.
