German Summer Schools

The German Summer Schools have a long tradition in Canada and are being actively supported by the Goethe Institutes in Canada.

The Goethe-Institut Canada offers support for Summer Schools through an application process. The application is open to all colleges and universities that have German language programs. Each institution to apply can receive a maximum of € 12.000 of support per year.

The assignment of support subject to the following conditions:

Teacher training and continuing teacher education
Only Summer School programs with pedagogically and methodologically trained students and/or teachers can be supported. Pure language courses with extracurricular cultural studies programs cannot be supported. The amount of pedagogical-methodological training within the overall program has to be clearly stated (content, timeframe) in the application.

Content
We support programs that promote a modern image of Germany and put innovative approaches to pedagogy and methodology at the forefront (use of new media, specialized courses etc).

Immersion
We support programs that are exclusively offered in German (total immersion).

Cooperation between universities
We support programs that promote the cooperation between universities as well as the dooperation with other educational institutions (accepting credits; exchange of guest teachers/lecturers; possibility of taking Goethe examinations etc.)

Use of support money
We only support programs that use the support for scholarships for teachers or graduate students and/or for pedagogical-methodological training within the Summer School programs (fees for teachers/speakers, DaF materials etc.)

In the application for support the following information has to be given:
institution that is applying
applicant, project manager responsible
name of the Summer School
schedule for the seminar
target group / expected number of participants
planned program / project outline/ incorporation of innovative elements
further qualifications to be acquired, if applicable
budget:
- list of expected costs
- costs contributed by organizer
- costs contributed by participants
- expected support funds

You can receive an application form from your respective Goethe Institute upon request (Toronto or Montreal). The application has to be received by the head of the language department at your Goethe Institute in full and with 5 copies until September 30 of the applicable year.

Around the following mid-January you will be notified whether and for which amount your application has been accepted. The amount will be derived from the overall allocation of the existing funds to all accepted applications.

The exact amount of your support money varies depending on the yearly fiscal situation of the Federal Republic of Germany and can be confirmed around end of May/beginning of June. Usually this amount corresponds with the funds recommended by the Goethe-Institut and the German government representatives.
