Lernziele – Learning outcomes

according to the Ontario Curriculum for International Languages, level 4, University preparation

Oral Communication: Listening

In this unit, students will

  • Demonstrate an understanding of vocabulary and language structures by responding appropriately to a variety of oral messages and identifying key ideas and information (e.g. – comment on views expressed in a discussion);
  • Demonstrate the ability to extract information from complex oral messages through various media and formal presentations (e.g. – prepare a synopsis about the podcast „Sportland Deutschland”);
  • Demonstrate an understanding of cultural aspects of the language by identifying regional differences in language as well as different levels of language (e.g. – compare language used in „Eine Ein-
    ladung zum Kaffee” or by young people playing soccer (Podcast: „Fußball”) to that of a formal commentary on sports and the Olympic games in the video podcast „Sportland Deutschland”).

Oral Communication: Speaking

In this unit, students will

  • Use standard pronunciation and intonation in German with accuracy and fluency (in skits, presentations and discussions);
  • Participate in conversations and group discussion using vocabulary and language structures appropriate to the level (e.g. – take part in a debate about the importance of Olympic athletes as role models for society);
  • Express personal opinions and explain ideas in a variety of prepared and open-ended conversations (e.g, – prepare their own podcasts reporting on specific sports in their school).


In this unit, students will

  • Read, for comprehension of main ideas and supporting details, selections from a variety of texts (e.g. – read and analyse articles on-line like „Feste in Deutschland”, or in textbooks „Essen ist gesund – Hueber Verlag Planet Kursbuch 3” or in magazines „German Classics – 10 Idole des Sports in Deutschland Magazin”);
  • Read aloud with accuracy and fluency a variety of articles;
  • Demonstrate the ability to make inferences and predictions (e.g. – analyse statistics in „Lieblingssendungen der Kinder” and comment on trends);
  • Respond to a range of texts in a variety of media by relating the ideas and themes treated to contemporary issues and personal experiences (e.g. – identifying the character traits of successful German athletes and how one can emulate them to fulfill one’s own dreams and goals);
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the culture of countries where the language is spoken in a variety of complex and well-researched-projects (e.g. – prepare a biography on a successful German athlete).


In this unit, students will

  • Write reports and compositions, using vocabulary and language structures appropriate to the level (e.g. – prepare a report on excessive consumerism in our society after reading „Kaufen, eine Krankheit”);
  • Express ideas and feelings in writing (e.g. – write a personal opinion piece after reading „Kaufen, eine Krankheit”);
  • Revise and edit their work for accuracy of content and logical organization ideas, as well as edit and proofread their work, with attention to accuracy in the use of vocabulary and language structures;
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the culture of Germany, Austria and Switzerland (e.g. – prepare a comparison of favourite pastimes in the three countries).

Grammar and Language Knowledge

In this unit, students will

  • Review the declination of preceded and unpreceded adjectives.
