South Kam students jetting to Germany

Place: Kamloops, BC
Event: Winners of the 'Step into German' competition.

Two Kamloops students are now in Germany for the rest of August.

Megan DeVries and Brittany Langereis won a three-week trip to Germany after they entered the Goethe-Institut Toronto’s Step into German video contest. The contest? Create a music video about your favourite city. The challenge? Do it all in German.

They used popular Britney Spears song Gimme More, only in German, with their own lyrics added in.

Their South Kamloop secondary German teacher, Anna Romano, had the students enter the contest in order to practice the language. “They don’t get a lot of practice of their German outside the classroom,” Romano said.

The pair left for Germany Aug. 7.

They will spend time in an immersive German-language course, explore the country and take part in cultural activities.

“We were really surprised,” Romano said. “I think that it is phenomenal.”

South Kamloops students also took second and third place.

Erica Krauseneck came in second with her video about Clearwater. She won an eight-GB iPod Nano.v Joann McLeod and Samantha Speller came in third with their clip about Barnhartvale. They each won a $50 iTunes gift certificate.

“I was really pleased that they picked from local cities,” Romano said.
