It is the third collaboration between the Ensemble Modern in Frankfurt and the Goethe-Institut Hongkong.

Our first collaboration was in 2008 when „Fantasy of the Red Queen“, one of the chamber operas produced by the Ensemble Modern and the Chinese composer Liu Sola, was performed under the umbrella of the New Vision Arts Festival 2008. It was in the same year when the Ensemble Modern, together with the Siemens Arts Program, initiated the project “into…” – a compositional approach to the Pearl River Delta. In 2008 and 2009 five composers from Germany and England visited Hong Kong and the cities in Pearl River Delta for one month respectively and put their impressions into compositions of contemporary music after their residencies. The compositions were subsequently presented in Berlin, Frankfurt and Hong Kong in 2010.

February 2012 sees our third collaboration, and now the fundamental question of the „into“ project - what does it mean to compose and to perform in today’s globalised world - will be the subject of discussion in an academic context.

From Feburary 5 to 11 we have invited the “International Ensemble Modern Academy” to Hong Kong and the general public will have the opportunity to participate at the Academy's worldwide unique seminar for contemporary music composition. Professors and students of the Academy (based in Frankfurt am Main) will work with young composers and musicians from Hong Kong for one week, trying out their own works on different stages before performing it at a concert on February 10. This is another artistic exchange initiative that Goethe-Institut Hongkong promotes, building on the existing cooperation with the Ensemble Modern.
