What awaits you in Heidelberg?
Heidelberg: this splendid city, celebrated in song, is the most romantic place in Germany, and is an astounding work of art in itself. Year after year, millions of visitors are enchanted by the world-famous fairy-tale backdrop composed of the castle, historic city and Neckar River. During its 800-year history, the city of Heidelberg, which has 140,000 inhabitants and is home to Germany's oldest university with 23,000 students, has inspired poets, painters and musicians. The region's Mediterranean climate ideally complements Heidelberg's unmistakable image as a cosmopolitan city where visitors feel right at home, a lively student scene and the perfect setting for studies and scientific research. Here the old is blended with the new, history with nature, and intellect with joie de vivre to create a setting of international renown. Among the outstanding facilities here are the five Max Planck Institutes, the German Cancer Research Center, the Print Media Adademy of the Heidelberger Druckmaschinen Corporation, and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory.
Culture
Whether you're looking for a romantic dream city or a lively cultural centre, a hotbed of scientific research or a partner city — Heidelberg is lively blend of tradition and innovative adventure. "It's in the packaging." To find out all there is to know about eye-catching boxes, tins and wrappers, you can pay a visit to the Packaging Museum — one of a dozen fascinating museums. The municipal Dreisparten-Theater, the Jugendtheater, various orchestras, private stages and international meeting points offer endless cultural variety. Festival fans have plenty of events to choose from: the Heidelberg Spring Fest, the Film Festival, the "Shlossfestspiele" or the literary festival. The youth scene has taken up residence in the Karlstorbahnhof.
Leisure
Take a stroll through the beautiful historic city. You'll find quaint pubs and cafés on every corner. Drop by the zoo or take a city tour. Take the Schlangenpfad — the "serpentine path" — from the Old Bridge along the Philosophers' Way to the castle above. You'll be amazed by the view of the city's rooftops, the Neckar and the mountains. Or take the 100-year-old cable car up to the mountain and onwards to the Königstuhl summit. Equally delightful is a boat trip on the Neckar River. Those who want a good workout will find all their heart desires at Heidelberg's 120 athletic clubs.
