Before Vanishing is Joude Gorani’s graduation project and her only directing experience to date. Gorani has a special and sharp understanding of cinema and life, which is clear in her only short film. Gorani never compromises; her content is precise but ambiguous. Gorani looks at the Bardy river, the river that has seen the rise of Damascus, the river which she, her family, writers and historians have used, with its floods and droughts, to reflect the life of Damascus. And now as the river is drying out, Gorani walks by its banks to discover life around it discretely and with absolutely no allegations.
About the Filmmaker
Joude Gorani studied film at the French Femis institute and returned to Syria to become one of its most promising film directors today. Gorani has worked with many Syrian filmmakers from all generations. She began working in documentary cinema and has filmed Diana El Jeiroudy’s Woman from Damascus, Kamila Majeed’s Black Lines and Nidal Al-Dabas’ Black Rock. She then moved on to feature films, shooting short productions with young filmmakers like Joud Said and Suwar Zirkly, and then long films with Nidal Al-Dabas, Maher Kadu, Joud Said and most recently Abdullatif Abdulhamid. She is one of Syria’s most prominent directors of photography.
