Arab Shorts

“Arab Shorts” is an initiative of the Goethe-Institut to support the visual arts in North Africa and the Middle East. Addressing the independent film and media arts communities in the Arab countries, it has set itself the goals of promoting cultural production and dissemination as well as networking both within the region and with Europe.

Independent Arab cinema and media art has come a long way. Despite a comparatively short history, it can pride itself today on various achievements and a growing interest. Yet it remains unknown territory to many, especially to distributors, festival organizers, and the mainstream media.

This is the starting point of the project “Arab Shorts” which over a three-year period, from 2009 through to 2011, will include a variety of events and activities, including
  • commissioned, curated film programs
  • an annual festival event featuring guests from both Arab and European countries
  • a web resource where film from Arab Shorts programs can be viewed from any computer anywhere, with already more than 60 films available online,
  • visits of Arab film experts to German festivals and institutions, and
  • publications such as journals and catalogues.
Promoting outreach and networking, piloting new technology, and proposing a broader notion of the curator and curatorial tasks – these goals have been sources of inspiration so far, and they will be for “Arab Shorts” in 2011!

The project team of the Goethe-Institut wishes to thank the artists and the curators, and we would like to extend our gratitude to the many people we have had the pleasure of meeting and talking to and whose advice and help has been invaluable.

The initial phases of the project were kindly supported by the “Hiwaruna” program of the Federal Foreign Office / Auswärtiges Amt Berlin.
