Double Club receives special prize at the European Award for Languages and releases the music video “Get the Ball Rolling”

The Goethe-Institut is delighted that for the second time in the last three years, the Arsenal Double Club has received a prize at the European Award for Languages. The prize, which was jointly awarded to key partners of the Double Club project at a packed out ceremony at Emirates Stadium on 29 June, is a recognition of the project’s outstanding contribution towards foreign language learning and teaching in the UK. The judges commended the Arsenal Double Club particularly for its replicability and its ability to inspire, motivate and engage young language learners from all backgrounds.

To celebrate the FIFA World Cup 2010 South-Africa the Goethe-Institut London, Arsenal FC and the UK-German Connection recently produced the music video „Get the Ball Rolling“. 250 pupils from 13 different schools took part in the performing and filming of the video, which took place in the Emirates Stadium on 22 June. All pupils had participated in the Double Club Languages Programme with Arsenal FC, Fulham FC or Ipswich Town. The multilingual video clip can now be used as a teaching resource in foreign language learning.

The Double Club is an innovative project that combines football with language learning and was launched by the Goethe-Institut London, Arsenal FC and the UK German Connection back in 2004. It has since been adopted by the French, Spanish and Portuguese cultural institutes, and numerous other football clubs across the UK have developed their own Double Club learning materials.
