  • Mission Statement
Our principal aims are
  • to bring the image of Germany in Britain up to date
  • the presentation of contemporary German culture
  • the embedding of German language and culture in the British educational system
  • the development of a European network

Bringing the image of Germany in Britain up to date

We are developing initiatives to bring images of Germany up to date, accentuate and change them. In this context we initiate, organise and support projects, which present and extend a differentiated image of Germany. In addition we support programmes which bring together people and institutions in Great Britain and in Germany.

Presentation of contemporary German culture

We display important positions in contemporary German culture to the best possible advantage. At the same time we not only show art and culture from Germany, but also wish to convey contemporary trends in intellectual debate and in the German social scene. One of our priorities is to expand individual and institutional contacts between the cultural milieus in Germany and Great Britain.

Embedding German language and culture in the British educational system

We are trying to embed the German language more effectively in the educational systems of the host countries. In general we want to convey more knowledge of Germany in state and non-state educational institutions. Among other goals we would like to integrate cultural projects in programmes of educational co-operation. We support multilingualism in Europe. We contribute our skills and experience to the realisation of the recommendations of the Council of Europe and the European Commission on the learning of foreign languages.

Development of a European network

We take up contemporary European debates in our projects and thereby encourage critical engagement with Europe in Great Britain. We are developing joint programmes with other European cultural institutes and partners and in this way wish to develop the European networks at and between the Goethe-Institut's sites.

Our partners in this are

  • the general public interested in language and culture
  • school pupils and students
  • specialists in German as a foreign language
  • Young professionals
  • experts, decision makers and opinion leaders in the fields of culture, politics, business, media, education and scholarship
