Lifelong Learning for U.S. Public Library Staff: Trends, Challenges and Case Histories

Following an overview of the staffing structure of U.S. public libraries and educational requirements for the various positions, the presentation will outline the challenges facing public libraries and the way in which these affect professional development. Sources and types of training and funding will be described. Examples will include the myriad of options available for professional development, the role of state library associations, the American Library Association, the Public Library Association and library schools. Several case histories will provide specific examples of lifelong learning for staff in American public libraries.
