John Badalu

John BadaluBadalu got into film industry since 2000 where he worked for Jakarta International Film Festival as the Operations Manager. He also programmed for British Film Festival for The British Council Jakarta and Italian Film Festival for Istituto Italiano di Cultura. He then worked for The Goethe-Institut as the Theater Manager.

Apart from films, Badalu also worked as a freelance journalists for some media such as The Jakarta Post, Jakarta Java Kini, Kompas, Djakarta Magazine and one of the contributors of Jakarta Good Food Guide and Makan Sutra. He often wrote film reviews, restaurant reviews, and performing arts coverage.

With a few friends, Badalu founded Q! Film Festival in 2002. At that time, it was the only queer film festival in predominantly muslim country. With this initiative, Badalu has received Ashoka Fellowship as one of the Changemakers. He also received a scholarship to study New Media at DAMS in Bologna, Italy. He was selected as an Arts internship from Asialink Australia to work at The Performance Space in Sydney. Q! Film Festival itself was voted as one of the 20 Best Initiative and Management in the world at Out Games in 2010.

Badalu now works for Berlin Film Festival, Shanghai Film Festival, Puchon Fantastic Film Festival and Traffic Film Festival in Brazil. He also co-produced 3 feature films: Parts Of The Heart (2012), Peculiar Vacation and Other Illnesses (2012), and What They Don't Talk About When They Talk About Love (2013). He is now developing film projects from Japan, Spain Thailand and Indonesia.
