Dance in Australia. A Current Snapshot

Dance is central to traditional Indigenous cultural life. Aboriginal and Islander dance companies began to form in the 1960’s taking dance from the communities into theatres and public spaces and transforming ceremony into spectacle. This sector of the art form continues to grow apace. European settlers brought their dances to colonial Australia at the turn of the last century.
