Kapa haka is Aotearoa/New Zealand‘s first dance tradition, a fundamental Māori art form. Its origins were brought to Aotearoa when Māori voyaged from other islands in the Pacific in a series of migrations beginning in 1200AD. Dance extended into the realms of entertainment and story-telling, but always referenced back to philosophical origins. It is based on two mythical paragons -
Hineruhi and
Tānerore - who captured the behaviour of light at dawn and at the quivering peak of the day in the
whare tapere tradition.
