In spite of the numerous political and social upheavals of the 20th Century, in Germany modern dance has continually extended its independence. Not that the various political regimes – the German Empire (1871-1918), Weimar Republic (1918-1933), national socialism (1933-1945), state socialism (1949-1989), and constitutional democracy (since 1949) – did not seek to influence, co-opt, distort, and hamper this evolution.
