Call for applications:
Artist-in-residence at 1 Shanti Road, Bangalore

1 Shanti Road is a reputed atelier in Bangalore with simple, when compared with European standards, yet pleasant working and living spaces. The duration of the residency could be one or two months and would include a stipend of 900 € per month (which also covers production costs), international airfare from Germany to Bangalore and back, and accommodation for a maximum of 2 months at 1 Shanti Road. International health insurance and visa charges have to be borne by the artist.
Applications are invited from artists who are living and working in Germany, and looking for a stint in an expanding global metropolis like Bangalore to complete or complement a particular art project, in the fields of visual/fine art, music, literature, architecture, design and performing art. The precise reasons underlying the desire to pursue an artistic project in a city like Bangalore should be specified. 1 Shanti Road offers the freedom to create in an ambience conducive to innovation and expression, as also the freedom from everyday mundane routine. Therefore, although it is not essential that the project should be completed during the duration of the residency, an “open studio” at 1 Shanti Road at the end of the residency is mandatory. This event should provide first glimpses into the outcome of the residency.
1 Shanti Road will extend all possible technical support, but applicants should be aware that circumstances could be different in India and should be prepared to adapt and deal creatively with potential challenges in terms of resources and materials.
As well as pursuing his or her own project, the incumbent will be expected to interact with the local art world as well as with the faculty and students of art institutions like the Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath. 1 Shanti Road is ideal for this purpose since it is very closely networked with the art scene in Bangalore. One of the objectives of this residency is to offer the local art community a fresh perspective and creative input from abroad, as well as to initiate a dialogue and exchange of ideas and opinions.
Extended travel in India, outside of Bangalore should be planned before or after the period of the Residency.
Mobile Space
The centrepiece of the year of Germany in India 2011-2012: Infinite Opportunities is the “Mobile Space”, a set of modern multi-purpose pavilions, designed especially for the Year of Germany in India by renowned German artist Markus Heinsdorff. The concept behind the “Mobile Space” combines design elements from both countries with state-of-the-art textile technology, thereby creating a symbiosis of art, architecture and technology. The Mobile Space will travel to 7 cities in India and will be located in Bangalore for 10 days at the end of June 2012. We are looking at a tie-up between the Artist-in-residence project and the Mobile Space project. Artists who are interested in the concept could plan their residency project such that it could be displayed in the Mobile Space.
