Terms and conditions

1. General Rules and Regulations
  • Course participants must be at least 16 years of age (exept for youth courses).
  • Minimum age for admission is 16 years (except for youth courses).
  • Knowledge of English is a prerequisite.
  • Make-up classes will not be conducted for classes missed by the students.
  • Students are requested to inform the teacher if they are prone to any illness like epilepsy, asthma etc., and provide telephone numbers of persons to be contacted and names of medicines in case of emergency.
  • If there are insufficient enrolments for a particular time slot, the course will be cancelled and the fees reimbursed. For students who have paid via debit/credit card, 2% of the fee will be deducted as service charges.
  • Cell phones should be placed on silent mode during class and, only in the most urgent cases can calls be made/answered outside the classroom. Text messaging is strictly prohibited.
  • Participants are obliged to comply with the course rules and house rules of the Institute.
  • The liability of the Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan and its staff is limited to intent and gross negligence. The Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan also accepts no liability for the cancellation of its services due to force majeur (e.g. natural disasters, fire, floods, war, official orders and all other circumstances beyond the control of the contractual parties).

2. Fees - Registration/Withdrawal/Change of batch

  • The course fees are due at the time of registration. Fees may be paid in cash, through DD/Credit/Debit card.
  • The contractually binding fee is the fee stated in the price list at the time of application in the current prospectus of the Institute.
  • Change of batch/timing is allowed before the commencement of the course against a payment of Rs.500.
  • Transfer to the next semester is allowed only during enrolment, before the commencement of the course, against a fee of Rs 1000. Such a transfer can be done only once.
  • Once the course has commenced, application for change of batch must be submitted within three weeks from the commencement of the course and the Institute reserves the right to take a final decision. After the commencement of the course, change of batch will be considered only on medical grounds.
  • Withdrawal from the course must be submitted in writing. The date of withdrawal will be the date of receipt of the letter at the Institute.
  • In case of cancellation of your enrollment upto 2 working days prior to commencement of the course, 20% of the course fees will be deducted as administrative charges. Thereafter there will be no refund
  • In case of withdrawal before the commencement of the course, 20% of the course fee will be deducted as administrative charges.
  • Fees once paid will not be refunded or adjusted to the next course under any circumstance after the commencement of the course.
  • If there are inadequate registrations for a particular course, it may be cancelled or postponed and the fees refunded or the students shifted to another course if available.
  • Cost of course materials i.e. books/CDs is not included in the course fee, unless otherwise specified.

3. Assessment Test

  • An assessment test will be conducted, at a fee of Rs.500, for students with prior knowledge of German, to determine level of admission.

4. Attendance/Exams

  • One course comprises a total of 150 units. Each unit is of a 45-minute duration. Depending on the type of course, 2 to 5 units are covered in a day (regular courses: 2 units, weekend courses: 5 units).
  • 70% of 150 units is the required attendance for eligibility to appear for the international exam. In other words, a student is permitted to miss a maximum of 30 units, i.e. 10 days for a regular course and 6 days for the weekend course. In case a student is short of attendance he/she can appear for the international exams as an external student.
  • The schedule for the international examination will be displayed during the first week of the course in all the classrooms. No changes can be made to suit individual needs.
  • Three internal assessments tests will be conducted and 60% is mandatory to get a “Completed successfully” certificate.
  • Only those students who have passed the international examination/internal assessment tests qualify to go to the next level. No exceptions! From A1 level onwards, all international examinations are mandatory.
  • Students not appearing for the international examinations (A1 students only)*, will be assessed on the basis of classroom performance and internal assessments tests. Appearing for class tests is mandatory. Re-tests will not be offered.
  • Certificates will be issued within a week from the date of the examination and results will not be given out on the phone.

5. Course level assignment/class size

  • Placement in course levels is based on the placement test conducted at the Institute.
  • Our courses have a minimum of 15 and maximum of 25 participants for the levels A1 to B2 and a minimum of 10 and maximum of 20 participants for the levels C1 to C2. If enrolments are insufficient on the starting date, we reserve the right to cancel or postpone the course. In this case we will offer the participants the opportunity to move to another course or to receive a full refund of the course fee. We regret that we can only conduct courses that have the minimum number of participants by the end of the enrolment period. To avoid cancellations of courses that would have taken place if participants had enrolled on time, we advise students in their own interest to register before the deadline.

6. Responsibilities of participants

  • Participants are obliged to comply with the course rules and house rules of the Institute.
