The Architect

Mathew & Ghosh Architects Pvt. Ltd.

We had a dream, and Nisha Mathew Ghosh and Soumitro Ghosh put it in concrete for us. They aspire to create architecture that is practical and simultaneously transcending mere practicality; and this design ethos perfectly matched our vision of a building that is suitable for the challenges of a cultural institute in the 21st century.

In a time of transition, its clear lines and modern aesthetics make the new Goethe-Institut/ Max Mueller Bhavan a focal point in the high-tech city of Bangalore. Nevertheless, the building has none of the aloofness that so often comes with the employment of steel and glass. Understanding the poetic possibilities inherent in the nature of material and its construction, Mathew & Ghosh succeeded in creating a space that is clearly structured and still conveys a friendly atmosphere.

The new building thus meets all the requirements of a cultural institute: its architecture offers up-to-date offices but also goes way beyond the cold and soulless functionality that characterises many modernist constructions. We are especially proud of the warm and welcoming ambience of our new Bhavan, of the exquisitely equipped multi-purpose hall, of the state-of-the-art classrooms, and of our new German Resource Centre. The new MMB Bangalore is decidedly an open space, a space where people can meet, learn and exchange ideas.
