Goethe-Institut and The Alliance Française of Madras, in collaboration with the INKO Centre and Unwind Centres, celebrate in Chennai the Fête de la Musique 2013, with several concerts and a music procession open to the public.

Amateur and professional musicians from the city will perform on both days. Students from the organizing institutions will also have an opportunity to demonstrate their talents.

Fête de la Musique:
Launched in 1982 by the French Ministry for culture, the Fête de la Musique is held in more than hundred countries in Europe and worldwide. It takes place every 21st of June, the day of the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere.

The festival is open to any participant (amateur or professional musicians). It allows the expression of all styles of music in a cheerful atmosphere. It aims at a large audience, working to popularize musical practice for anyone and everyone.

Musicians perform for free, and all the concerts are free to the public, which is why they’re usually conducted in open air areas such as streets and parks or in public buildings like museums, train stations, etc...Furthermore, Fête de la Musique is a way to encourage major music institutions (orchestra, operas, choirs, etc.) to perform outside their usual locations. These institutions could thereby welcome other genres of music. The festival thus offers an opportunity to develop exchanges between city centres and their outlying areas, to offer concerts in hospitals or prisons and to promote encounters and exchanges between young musicians and well-known talents.

June 21

On June 21, students of the Alliance Française and the Goethe Institut will give their best performances. Tails on Fire,
Chennai’s own professional rock band will also make their presence on this day.

June 22

On June 22, concerts will be hosted at the Alliance Française and at the Goethe Institut. There will also be a musical march between the two venues. The march starts at the AFM at 4.45 pm and ends at the Goethe Institut, where yet another gig awaits the public, along with Live Karaoke show lead by Charlie Shin from Korea. The procession marks 3 stops on Khader Nawaz Khan Road, including Tuscana Pizzeria, O2 Fitness and Auroville Boutique. Short live performances will be conducted at the porticos of these venues.
