This time Docu Splash! will present a series of German films by DEFA. The DEFA retrospective presents for the first time the films of DEFA (Deutsche Film AG), the former East German film studios, which are relatively unknown in India. The films have been selected with the aim of providing an overview of film production in the German Democratic Republic. Twenty-two years after the fall of the Berlin Wall they bear witness to everyday life in East Germany. As part of Germany’s cultural heritage, they are an important source for understanding the history of divided Germany.

These films feature just a small section of DEFA Foundation’s large stock comprising 950 feature films, 820 animation films and more than 5800 documentary films that were produced between 1946 and 1992 in various DEFA studios. Besides classics such as “The Legend of Paul and Paula” (Die Legende von Paul und Paula) “The Sons of Great Bear” (Die Söhne der großen Bärin), and “Traces of Stones” (Spur der Steine), lesser known documentary films such as “Germany – final terminal East” (Deutschland – Endstation Ost) and “After Winter Comes Spring” (Winter Adé), which portray East Germany shortly before the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, and short animation films will be screened.

Further details will be announced closer to the event.
