Am Ameisenstrand
Die frischen Wohnhalme, die Arbeiterinnen,
die mit den unbezahlten Leben übern Trichterrand
der Siedlung rieseln, ihren kleinen grauen Löwen
Traurigkeit wecken: Alles klar wie die Skyline
hinter van Eycks Kathedralenwiese

die bedachten Fronten, der Untergang
zwischen den Häusern. Erkennbar

Ant’s Shore
The new stalks of skyscrapers, the workers
who swarm with their unpaid lives over the funnel
edge of the settlement arousing the small, grey
antlion sadness: all is as clear as the skyline
behind van Eyck’s cathedral meadow

the prefabricated fronts, the falling
dusk between the houses. Nothing
under the sun, it seems, is connected:
nothing, not me or you or anything else,
unlike our black dogs, can be touched. Sharp.

We can never pay off our debts, but sometimes
The defenseless and the valued meet in the neon-sign
over the bar, sometimes just like words:
dragonflowers. Ant’s shore. Sometimes
find attractions, attributes such as small, grey, fire-

arm, regimen for the spirit, dictated by microbes,
miracle of millimeter, minimum wage. Strike out
small and grey – we find ourselves at the funnel- edge
and fall together to the bottom, all the while
we walk, talk, monologues scattered

under us, above us all, and we give thanks. Oh, thanks.
Let’s go to the dogs.
They run, pawing, snuffling,
they seek and find the latch, the door
casts the shadow that we want.
