Wallscapes Bombay

"...Every image speaks of a time and this connection between time and image is as vital as the relationship of perception with memory. What is in 'being' sits in an infinite linear stretch of time. The instrument of identification is 'differentiation', is of contrast and is of 'change' from one to the subsequent.

Thus when we speak of "Urban Change", we do not merely showcase what there is and what it is becoming, but see 'change' as a scheme in the pursuit of identity, the perception of time present and of the resilience of memory.
The wall stands still as time moves past it and life revolves around it, grows on it, adds to, and reduces from it. The wall becomes a witness and a document and it my subject in these photographs.

Some of the pictures were taken along the wall that lines P. DeMello Road. Every six feet the wall changes colour and has a new scheme of nails, hooks and sometimes shelves. These are what is left of the slum-homes that used to cling to this wall, that have been cleared away to make path for development.

Also included are some photos taken on the streets of Bandra, and some others of Mahesh Textile Mill at Colaba. Shut for many years now the mill is rented out to filmmakers and photographers to use as space for sets.  Discos, ramps, hideouts and the fiery Bollywood climaxes have brought many of its roofs down...."
