The International Winter University (IWU) Kassel combines high quality education, credit points, priceless personal experience, and first hand impressions about Germany and Europe. This year's winter program will take place from December 29, 2009 until January 19, 2010 and we would be delighted to welcome you here in Germany!
Reflections on German History: Literature and Art of the 19th and 20th centuries
(45 contact hours, 4 ECTS)
In this seminar, students take a closer look at "Age of Goethe" (Goethe-Zeit), the end of the 19th century (Nietzsche) and the revolutionary art movement (Bauhaus and Expressionism). Through excursions and group activities, students explore how contemporary German culture has been shaped by historical developments in the past 200 years.
Environmental Engineering / Renewable Energy Sources
(45 contact hours, 4 ECTS)
The University of Kassel plays a leading role in environmental studies (Renewable Energy) and is one of Germany’s outstanding universities in the field of environmental education and research.
The seminar includes field trips and excursions and covers:
- An introduction to international climate policy
- Renewable energy and energy systems from a German and European perspective
- Environmental protection
- Solar-thermal technologies and systems
- Photovoltaics
- The history and future of wind energy, wind farm management
- Biomass, natural gas storage
- Rational and efficient energy usage: low energy housing and sustainable building
Target Group
Advanced undergraduate and graduate students in related fields. No previous knowledge of German is required.
Learn German
All students attend intensive German language courses offered at different levels (30 contact hours, 2 ECTS). Each IWU student is paired with a University of Kassel student who serves as their "Tandem Language Partner", giving them an opportunity to practice language skills and deepen their cultural experience.
Extracurricular Activities – Highlight: New Year´s Eve in Berlin
- Workshops in German culture (e.g. cooking + dancing)
- Optional three-day trip to Berlin to celebrate New Year's Eve in Berlin (EUR 200)
- City tour in Kassel, excursion to a medieval city, movie night, ice skating, hiking, sports and more!
Students will experience German culture and every day life first hand as IWU offers the unique experience of living with German host family in Kassel. The homestay adds immeasurably to the study abroad experience by guaranteeing daily opportunities to improve language and intercultural skills outside of the classroom.
