Electronic. Experimental. Dance music

Concert
Friday, 27th March 2009, 7.00 pm
Sophia Bhabha Hall, Sophia College, Cumballa Hill, Mumbai

Lovers of electronic music, watch out! You are about to experience a mind-blowing act by one of the most influential and innovative bands in electronic music. Right here in Mumbai.

Mouse on Mars, founded in 1993 by the Germans Jan St. Werner and Andi Toma, are either completely unknown or praised to the skies, either reviled or revered. So it goes, in a word, with pioneers, and Mouse on Mars are indeed nothing less than pioneers of electronic music.

They were the first to spread the word abroad about Germany’s booming electronic scene, which had long since emerged from the shadow of its overlords, the band Kraftwerk. And Mouse on Mars chalked up successes in England, Japan and the US. There, as in Germany, they surprised by refusing to conform to the prevailing cliché of nerdy electro-tinkerers. They prepared the ground for a whole generation of musicians toiling at the intersections between dancefloor and independent rock, between ambient and dub and techno and house, between guitar and sampler.

Mouse on Mars insist on situating their own work in the midst of the multifarious interrelations between music and art, aesthetics and politics. “At any rate,” Werner once said, “we believe music could be a political force.” Specifically and especially music which, like theirs, by and large does without words.

Mouse on Mars line-up:
